Belt Choices can save $$$$

I had one of my "good" days yesterday!  I had/have a number of blades that have been heat-treated, and are ready to start finish grinding.   So I got busy and here are the results!   a SINGLE (as in ONE) VSM XK706X in 50 grit... and the belt still has some life left!  (see image)

One thing I always try to get across to my students is to be wise with selecting the grits you use for belts.  If you choose to use a 36 grit, you almost always will be forced to then go to a 50 or 60 grit to successfully remove the 36 grit scratch marks.   With the ever-soaring prices of show supplies/belts, it only makes sense to be smart with your belt choices.   I highly recommend using either a 50 or 60-grit belt for your "heavy grit" belts.  A quality 50 grit belt will remove material VERY quickly when used properly, and it will allow you to jump to a 220 grit during finish grinding, rather than using 36 grit, then a 50/60 grit, then 120 grit....THEN a 220.

Using this method will help eliminate 2-3 grit sizes of the belts you use....meaning your saving $$$$.
